2015 GUEST ARTIST: Sharon Switzer
#HEARDONTRANSIT - a series of new videos commissioned by TUFF for the 2015 festival.
Sharon Switzer is a digital media artist, the founder of both Art for Commuters and PATTISON’s Art in Transit programme, and is the Director of the Toronto Urban Film Festival. After eight years of thinking about what it takes to make temporary artwork function successfully within the heavily trafficked public space of the TTC, she finally decided to offer something of her own.
#HEARDONTRANSIT is Switzer’s personal ode to public transport and the wealth of humanity that inhabits it daily. Bringing together 30 texts found on Twitter that repeat odd and often amusing things overheard by others while on buses, streetcars and subways around the world, this series of 10 one-minute videos speak as much about the authors who thought to share the one-liners, as it does about the originators of the quotes. It is within this layered frame of reference that meaning can be found amidst the humour in the work.
Sharon Switzer’s video practice often relies on quirky or self-deprecating humour, carefully balancing text with found or created visuals. Her recent work draws from the twitterverse, a treasure trove of fascinating found text. She has shown in public and private galleries as well as art fairs in Canada, the USA, and the EU. She is represented by Corkin Gallery in Toronto.
