While TIFF has been grabbing all the headlines, it's easy to forget about one of the other film festivals taking place in Toronto this week. Now in its fifth year, the Toronto Urban Film Festival is truly the people's festival, screened for free on TTC platforms throughout the city. While it doesn't have the red carpets, gifting lounges or, um, movie theatres and audio, what it does have is a line-up of 67 curated films playing every 10 minutes at most Toronto subway stations, and non-stop at Bloor, Dundas and St. Andrew.

Du 9 au 18 septembre, le Festival du film urbain de Toronto (TUFF) prend d’assaut les écrans des stations de métro de la TTC pour la cinquième année consécutive.

As the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) makes headlines above-ground, the TTC will be home to a film festival of its own.

The Reel Guys take the TTC – usually on the way to a movie – and find that the worst part of the trip is that you can’t watch movies while you wait for the train … until now. Starting on Friday, the Toronto Urban Film Festival will play dozens of movies on the ONESTOP TTC subway platform screens for an estimated audience of 1.3 million daily commuters. The Reel Guys got a sneak peek at 10 of the one minute short films.

Torontonians are invited to submit their one-minute silent films that are of interest to an urban population to The Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF).

This year, award-winning Canadian filmmaker - and Torontonian - Atom Egoyan will judge the festival, which is looking for submissions from Canadian and international filmmakers, animators and video artists.

Onestop and Art for Commuters announce TUFF award winners at Closing Party

Toronto, Ontario [September 19, 2010] - The winners of this year's 4th annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) which played on Onestop's TTC network of digital displays on subway platforms were announced at its annual award ceremony, hosted at The Drake Hotel. The event drew the attention of a record breaking audience full of film-makers, enthusiasts, TUFF jury members, media, and even mayoralty candidate Joe Pantalone.

There’s a lot more than a vowel separating TUFF from TIFF. The Toronto Urban Film Festival will see its share of line-ups but they’ll be on subway platforms where the short-listed one-minute films will be looping for the next week and a half. Eighty films in eight categories explore the urban experience from a variety of perspectives: The City is a Poem, The Emotional City and The Medium is the Message, are three of the quirkier themes.

Toronto, Ontario [May 4, 2010] -- Deepa Mehta, whose dazzling film trilogy, Fire, Earth, Water, captivated audiences worldwide will be this year's Guest Judge for the Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) airing on Onestop's network of digital displays in the Toronto Transit System in September. Mehta will choose the Top 3 films of the 2010 festival as well as the winners of the WIFT-T Award for Most Ambitious Film by a Female Director, and the Naish McHugh Award for Emerging Filmmakers, a $2,500 cash award from the City of Toronto.
